Upgrading to the D7100 and trying to decide which body to keep as a backup

As the title says, I've decided to buy a D7100.

Woo Hoo!! ;)

I currently have a D3200 and a D5000. My question is, if you've ever owned either of those or both, etc...

Which would you keep and why?

All opinions welcome! I don't want to bias the thread by saying which way I'm leaning... hopefully some wise folks will chime in and I'll go through my thoughts.

Do you feel like there was a big difference between the D3100 and the D5100?

Like say a difference in quality, or quality of shot, or just functional differences specific to things you like to shoot, etc?

The D5100 was hands down the better camera for a variety of tech reasons along with the flip out screen.
But the feel of the D3100 was better.

If you had the D3200 and the D5200 I'd recommend the D5200. But considering you have a D5000 I believe the D3200 beats it in tech and feel. :)

First it's a pro camera with much much better built quality, much better controls in a faster ease of use, where those other cameras are menu driven. The D300 will match your D7100 in buttons and it will be less changes shifting from one to the other. They are similar even in weather resistance. :)

Hmmm... ok, go on... I'm listening. Why?

I have two D300 Nikon's and I love them. Here is a few shots of one of mine. :D

But don't buy one because I recommended it! Look into things and make up your own mind. It's not the best camera for everyone as my buddy @Blacktop found out. He's a D7100 shooter too now, and I bought his D300! Lol :)

My inclination would be to lean towards the D3200 over the D5000 in your case, for two reasons: D3200 is lighter than the D5000 (is my expectation, but I don't have the exact weight measurements) and the D3200 has a newer sensor than the D5000. As an alternative to the D7100, the lighter weight might make it an easier "go to" camera for general walk around use.

I really like the articulated screen on the D5000, so that's the reason I was leaning that way.

RC, I'm honestly thinking about selling both, getting the D7100 now, and wait until the Spring or early Summer and buy a used D5300 as my second body. I see that's what you're doing as well..

I started with the D5300, so that was an easy decision for me. When I told the wife I wanted the D7100, her response was "so I get to have your old camera!" and that was that. :D

My girlfriend shoots with a D5300 and I use a D7100... The image quality of the D5300 never ceases to amaze me.

It certainly equals, and (I think) even surpasses, that of the '7100 sometimes; not by much and not all the time, but yeah... The D5300 is *not* fooling around.

Good to hear, sounds like a plan! I won't need a backup until next summers trip... so, be great if a D7200 were to hit around then!
