I haven't followed that thread but it sounds like I'm in your camp. I've always believed that the glass used and the photographer's eye are MUCH more important than the camera body itself. Good glass produces a sharper image and better color than cheap glass. And there's no disputing the value of skills (i.e. composition, use of DOF, etc).

Period. End of story.

Heck, I've seen beautiful pictures taken with a 3.2MP Powershot.

Agreed ! There's a huge photo competition in the UK run by the BBC , a wildlife / nature type of thing, that one year, was won by a someone using a pocket point and shoot.
It was an amazing shot, and showed the world just how much composition and the eye is a contributory factor , rather than the latest gear available. I'm not saying that we should all go back to P & S cams, as this would be useless for the bird photgraphers ( for instance ) but it does wake people up to what can be done
