I checked out the La Chua Trail south of Gainesville today. It is about 1.75 miles long though wetlands with several large lagoons, some of which are at least covered with water hyacinth and/or duckweed. There are wild horses and bison at the end of the trail but they were too far away even for the beast, DX and 2x. There was not a lot of diversity in water fowl, only a single Great Blue Heron and lots of smaller Great Egrets. What there was NO shortage of were Alligators. There were well over a hundred ranging from about 3 feet to about 9 feet. Most were fairly skittish, but a few of the larger ones were basking on the shore and could not be bothered by the people.
This was the largest one I saw, it was at least 9 feet. I was maybe 25 feet from it. Me, the Beast and tripod were "RealTree'd" up and I was behind some marsh grass so I am not sure it even knew I was there. If it did know I was there it was obviously not the least bit bothered my by presence.
There was also a pretty good range of gators in very close proximity of each other, ranging from 3 to maybe 6-7 feet
This one was not all that large, maybe 6 or 7 feet but there were several small Great Egrets right near it. I wonder if any of them became lunch today?
