Update on Need thoughts on current lenses

I had purchased my Nikon 70 - 300mm f4-5.6D lens a few years ago mainly based on price and range. After more edumacation, I see it is not the best choice. What would you recommend as a replacement that has the equivalent reach and at a price of around $200.00 (if possible). If it has macro all the better.

Thanks

I think it will be tough to find a similar lens in the $200 range that performs any better. If you can totally blow the budget, I really like my Tamron SP 70-300. That's over $400, but sometimes good rebates come along. Tamron also has a cheaper 70-300 (thats the one with macro), but I don't know that it would be any better than what you have. The SP version is a very nice lens though.
Are you shooting at a good shutter speed? Try 1/600 and stop the lens down a bit. That's probably the best you can do. If you are still not pleased, you might have to spend more.

$200? Unfortunately....you will have to look in the used department. And even then you will more than likely not find anything in that price.

I would keep saving. While it stinks. You won't have to settle for just "good enough".

I have the Nikon 70-300 and find it to be a nice lens. I use it on my D7100 and D750. Why do you think you need to replace it? Also $200 is not a lot of money for a lens. That will Buy you a refurbished Nikon 55-200

70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED[/h]i would look for this one, used or refurbished. works well for me with d7100 or d600/610. trade your lens for upgrade, some dealers will give you a price
on the phone but will need to see the lens for final price. helps to have original box.

The OP has the older 70-300 D lens.

I have the newer 70-300mm Vr Nikon lens, which is much better then the older D lens that you have. I also happen to have it for sale at the moment. PM me if you might be interested.

I have owned the 70-300 D, and I also own the VR version. The newer one is 10 times better than the D version. ( Don't buy the 70-300 G non-VR, its probably worse than the D)
Better to wait and save to buy the VR version ( like the one Blacktop Pete is selling)

I have the D version and it does not AF on D3xxx or D5xxx series. Further it is really bad beyond 200mm. Recently I borrowed the Tamron 70-300 Macro, and that is much better, has AF and a macro mode. The price is also similar to the Nikon 70-300D. In case you have low budget, sell off the Nikon lens and get the Tamron one.

A refurbished 70-300 vrg will be around 300 bucks. It's gotta be the VRG as the D and G are horrible lens.

Which Tamron lens did you borrow? I would like to compare to the Nikon version.

I'd tell you to save up a bit more and get the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD.

Bought new it'll set you back about $450, refurbs can be had for $300 or so. Your D7100 will thank you.

It gets a good US rebate fairly often too. Looks like it just came off of a $100 rebate July 31. I'm very happy with this lens.
