Managed to sneak in a little time today dodging the snowflakes and fire off a few quick test shots using The Stack.... my spiffy new Nikkor 200-500 with my 1.4 vII TC... on my D7100.

If i remember correctly you have the Tamron 150-600 if so could you do a quick test sometime,a guy on another forum claims the Tamron is a match for the Nikon @ 500mm,would be interesting to know if he has a extra good copy of the Tamron or a bad copy of the Nikon or maybe bad eyesight,or could he be right,i am not sure if he stopped the Tamron down to f8 and shot the Nikon wide open,i think he may have done.

I've already done that test. I borrowed a friend's 200-500 and raced them.

As for image quality, it's (pardon the pun) a photo finish. But there's three things the Nikkor did better:
1. Autofocus latches on far better with the Nikkor.
2. Nikon's VR outshines the Tamron VC,
3. The Nikkor functions quite well with the 1.4 vII TC I already owned; The Tamron would not AF with it.

In short, I'm not getting better shots, but I'm increasing my keeper rate.

I was going to ask the same as Mike. I just got my safety bonus check. I already had my mind made up about the 200-500, but since you also own the Tammy ......

1. That is what I've been reading for months now about the autofocus. That by itself is a huge seller over the Tamron.
2. For me not a dealmaker or breaker. For tracking with high shutter speed which is what I would mostly use it for I have VR off. However the 'sports" mode is interesting.
3. I have seen shots with the 1.4TCII attached and they look fine on stationary birds and wildlife. I don't know how they would be using tracking

I'm off to order one.

I'm glad to read this. I have a Tamron 150-600 and I have tried a Nikon 200-500 in the store. Your findings matched my own impressions exactly.

For a non-moving subject, the Tamron is just as good plus has a little extra zoom, which I like.

But once you're looking at a moving subject, be it birds in flight, planes at an airshow, or cars at a race course, the Nikon is the better lens and it's only a few hundred dollars more.

I'm now setting aside some money for the Nikon lens. When I have set aside enough, I will probably list my Tamron on ebay (I got it so cheaply I can probably make a profit on it anyway) and then use the proceeds to buy the Nikon at that time.

What makes this choice for me is the fact that I enjoy taking action shots more than photographing non-moving subjects. Faster focus action, better VR, and a better chance of AF NOT getting lost with a large change in subject range all point me toward the Nikon.

For non-moving or slow moving subjects, I'd keep the Tamron and never worry about it again.
