Sigma 120-300 Sport

Whats the deal with this lens?

I sold one of my ATV's for enough to cover this lens, went to purchase it and BAM, not in stock anywhere????

What are some other options for Tele sports lens? Is the new 300 f4 up to snuff? Mostly Daytime shooting track/baseball/saturday afternoon football. Weight is of no concern.

$4000 is my top of the line budget.

Thanks

Production on anything that expensive is usually done on an as-needed basis trying to match demand. I suspect that the new 150-600mm Sport has but a crimp in demand for this one. That said, it's an outstanding lens, albeit one that I do not possess. My brother has one (Canon shooter) and is absolutely in love with it. He's a pro news photographer and it's his go-to sports lens along with a Canon 300mm f2.8. He endured some issues with the autofocus with his EOS 1D Mk IV, but never went elsewhere because of how great it is. He detailed the entire experience, including resolution and improvements since here...

Saga of the Sigma 120-300 "Sports"

And btw, it's not showing as Out Of Stock at Adorama - at least not for me.

As for other lenses, I'm hearing only great things about the new 300mm f4, though I wonder how it'll do with a 1.7-2X TC in anything other than daylight conditions. You would want to go with the f2.8 but that's obviously out of budget.

If you click on item in small print says it is on backorder.

Originally, this was my thinking, but I am only shooting "Day events" so I am always battling this f4 to f2.8 issue. Often I am stopping down to f4 during day hours for additional sharpness/DoF anyways.

I have been using the tamron 70-200 VC USD which has served me well for portraits but the better I have been getting shooting sports, I am starting to notice my focus speed is sometimes lacking and 200mm just isn't cutting it.

Tamron 150-600 - $1100
Sigma 150-600 C - $1100
Sigma 150-600 S - $2000
Nikon 300 f4 PF - $2000(Weight here has me very interested)
Sigma 120-300 2.8 - $3600(I am struggling on the Lust vs Need Scenerio)

If I purchase the 120-300 I forsee myselff selling my Tamron 70-200 VC USD because when I am in the 70-100 range on my tamron for Portraits I will be using my 85 1.8 g. So realistically the price of the sigma would be 2600 after the sell of my tammy.

Was I missing any lenses in the sub 4k price range?

And then I keep thinking, hell I could get the 300 PF, an extender, and the Tamron 150-600 for the same price.....Anyone know the winning Lotto numbers?

The Siggy 120-300 f2.8 is supposed to be an outstanding lens, and maybe, just maybe one day i'll trade my Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 in for one. At 4K youre getting into the used Nikon 200-400mm territory(?)

For what it's worth...
I have a friend who just bought the new 300 f/4 PF VR, and he absolutely loves it. From everything I can tell from his images and some of the ones posted online, it seems to produce at least equal IQ as the previous 300 f/4 (which I own, with the 1.4 TC permanently attached), except in a MUCH smaller, lighter package with very effective VR. He says the VR works as well as that found on the 70-200 f/4.

Most likely I will sell my existing 300 f/4 and this will be my next lens.

It was actually the lens I was waiting on before this whole 150-600 hoopla. Then I came across enough funds to trade 1 toy(ATV) for another(Sigma 120-300) so it threw some wrinkles in my basket. I just keep thinking I can replace the 70-200 and the 300 f4 with the sigma 120-300 but the WEIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The size and weight is what really seals the deal on the new 300 f/4 for me. The thing is about the same size as the 24-70 f/2.8 and is half the weight of the previous 300 f/4! It doesn't even need a tripod collar.

Combine that with effective VR, and I'm hoping that it will enable me to rely less on my tripod & monopod and get more handheld wildlife shots in lower light conditions.
