Not just one Sigma 150-600 f/5-6.3, TWO of them

Sports model ($1999) now has a Contemporary brother at $1099.

Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary and Sports ? Head-to-Head Comparison

Interesting concept. You would think all that extra bulk would buy you a stop or so of light, but it looks like it just won't fall to pieces. Seriously though, it doesn't make such a compelling case against the Nikkor 80-400 in terms of price. It was an easy decision with the Tamron as I picked up two for the price of one Nikkor and so far I'm very happy with it.

I'm going to be very curious as to the difference in IQ for the extra money. A lot of the features I liked when the Sports was announced and this seems to have retained all of them. As for the Sigma vs. the Tamron, I love the 4 point focus calibration Sigma gives you with the USB dock. I don't know if that alone justifies my upgrading from the 150-500mm, as I expect those to take a hit on the used market.

I agree with Geoffc. An extra stop of light would have been nice for the price. Would have thought the sports model would have been f4. And I don't get the USB dock. Why would I want to adjust the focus speed? Just allow me the fastest it's capable of.

I suspect what you're paying for with the Sports model is the build quality...

...though I would have loved to have seen this test run with the zoom fully extended.

Everything comes at a price and I have no idea what bringing it to f4 would have done to it, but the last thing you want to do is build a big, heavy 150-600mm that's f/4-6.3, have it come in at $2500, and then have people say "Hell, I'll just get the 120-300mm f/2.8 and a TC for a grand more and be ahead of the game.

I think this was a direct response to the Tamron offering and then taking it up a notch to pro build quality.

As for the 3 AF Speed Modes on the Sports line, I'm guessing it's a feel thing with each mode coming at a cost to accuracy? Unfortunately I can't seem to find anything specific about them anywhere.

For me as an amateur I'm happy with the build of the Tamron at the price point. If all else fails it has a five year warranty. I know I'll end up wondering if the Sigma is sharper/faster etc, but that's just my way.

Very interesting move by Sigma, but at least on paper I don't see all those "pro" features adding up to a whole large on top. That and the whole extending zoom weather sealing? How long is the one seal at the tip of the main body gonna last with all that zooming anyway?

Otherwise I feel they lost the x-600 race since Tammy came out with it first and not a bad version of the idea. Plus the same price point for the standard versions, not a terribly compelling argument.

If I remember correctly, this is described in the Dock software when calibrating. If you choose the faster mode, it will lock on it's first attempt without any split second of micro-adjusting.

If/when I buy a big lens it will be a fast one. I have no need for speed below 24mm, but above that, it's f4 or better from now on. I'd save for the 120-300 2.8, awesome for Fx/Dx and 810mm on my Cx.

I get a huge kick out of the fact that my 80-400mm lens is considered to be a fairly compact light lens for it's type! Lmao :)
Photography the other weightlifting sport! Yes we geeks gots lots of muscles! Lol :D

It's an interesting marketing strategy. A general purpose to compete with Tamron and a high end one because no one really wants second best!

Man, no kidding. When you real lens weighs almost more than your camera w/ a kit lens...
