AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

I think I may have found my walkaround/character portrait/wildlife lens. This would seem to merge nicely with my planned 16-35mm f4 landscape lens.

The 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 on a D610 seems to do the trick. 4.5" long, a little heavy at 800g, but covers 2 lenses for me. (24-85mm walkabout, 70-300mm wildlife & character portrait). It will also focus to 1.6', so it can be a temporary semi-macro until I can afford a proper 105mm macro.

Does anyone have the 28-300mm?

A question about use on an FX camera. If I used this in DX mode (on a D610), would that give me a 450mm equivalent lens (albeit at 10mp)? Would the resulting quality be usable?

Hi...Usually super zooms loose a bit of clarity on both ends....You might be better off to rent one to see if it will do what you require...

Have a look at one of these "Nikkor AF300mm f4 ED IF" Much better quality images from it and second hand about $500

Thanks Alan

With no access to camera shops, I'm not sure I can rent. I have to rely on reviews & forum member's experience. I've no doubt that a prime would be better quality, but then I don't get the walkaround facility. To me, the 28-300mm looked a more useful lens than the 70-300mm which is quite a bit longer in size & doesn't really hit the boxes for walkabout.
