The 16-85 might not be the best, but I think it's certainly better than the 18-55.

Nikon AF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6GII ED DX or AF-s Nikkor 16 -85 G ED...???
There are three versions of the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 produced by Nikon: The 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S EDII, The 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR, and the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VRII. I'm not familiar with a "GII" version.

The G II would be the second generation of the 18-55mm without VR, so I think it is the same as the current non-VR lens. The first gen is no longer made.

So will your 16-85 at the longer end. At least you have that extra reach when you need it. I sold off mine because I want a faster lens.

According to DXO Mark there's not a lot of difference between the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G VR and the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED.

Of the two, the 16-85mm has a little less chromatic aberration, a little less distortion and a little less vignetting.

Those three areas doing a little better on the 16-85mm put it a couple points ahead of the 18-55mm.

If you are shooting at the long end more and can do without the wider area, the 24-85 vr is fantastic on dx.
