Nikon 300mm f4D vs 70-200 VRII w/TC 14

This November I will be headed to Daytona International Speedway for the end of year HSR vintage race. Some of the distances can be very very long. I was looking at renting this lens to use on my D5200, and I am also considering getting a teleconverter for my 70-200 as a different option.

Has anybody used a 300 F4 D and what do you all think of it? For those that have used it, how does it stack up against a 1.4 TC'd 70-200 VRII? Thanks guys!

I have no experience with the 300 f4. The 70-200 with a 1.4 converter would be much more flexible. They both work very well together & deliver top quality images.

I have both. The 300mmF4 & 70-200VR 2.8 and the 1.4 & 1.7 TC - Get the 300mmF4 the IQ is way better. What comes close and matches the IQ of the 300mmF4 is the new 80-400VRG

the 300 f4 and tc 14ii is a great performer if you dont mind the lack of vr. super sharp optics and built like a tank. DSC_1987.jpgDSC_1946.jpgDSC_1874.jpg

$85 to rent the 300 f4 or $400-$500 to buy the TC is why I am asking.

If considering the 300mm F4 AF-S is the one you need....I have the the older version 300mm F4 IF ED AF...It hunts a bit in very low light, with good light it does a great job....A couple of surf shots below....

Fantastic images! At worst it might be a bit overcast, it will be November so overcast isn't unusual.

If only I had a real back yard where I could plant flowers for just that purpose.

Thanks for the great information guys, this is what I was looking for!

Now it's time to see if I can rearrange the guts of my lowepro backpack to handle a 300 and my 70-200.
