i have a nikon d3100 and use the 18-55mm lens and the next size up (i think the 55-200mm) i take pictures at seaworld of the whales and dolphins, and they have whale shows at night.

It may be kind of hard without a faster lens. Try shooting RAW and turning up your iso. Adjust your shutter so than you get the most light without motion blur.

55-200mm min shutter speed 1/200 f stop 8 in "s" shutter priority adjust iso up till you can get these numbers 200 & f 8 vr on if hand held off is using mono or tripod. This should get you started. Take some test shots for exposure b 4 the actions starts. 200 @ f8 should work for cloudy day with both lens again adjust iso.
