Curious which lens...

Currently I have two lenses for my D7000...a 50mm 1.8 and the standard 18-105mm.

In your opinion, which is the better lens to use for portraits?

Curious, as I want to start doing more portrait work...or is there an even better option (but like to work with what I have = saving for new lenses).

depends, outside, I would say the zoom, covers the 50mm range, and allows more flexible compositions,,, with tripod, and low dof, 50mm is a nice portrait lens for DX sensor (translates close to the classic 85 portrait lens).

The 50mm f/1.8 on a crop body will give you approximately an 85mm field of view, which is a great focal length for portraits. Having the ability to open up and shoot at wide apertures is also great for portraits when you want subject isolation and beautiful 3D rendering, especially on location or when shooting environmental and lifestyle portraiture.
