Hello! I finally decided to join a forum. I started out with a D3000 and now i own a d5100.
I am looking to purchase a prime lens today. probably around 35mm.
any tips, comments would be appreciated!

I would suggest you stick to the AF-S lenses with your D5100. And yes, a 35 or a 50 would suit you quite well.

By the way.....how do you pronounce BNR34RB26DETT? ;) Is there a shorter version or a nickname we could use> :) And are you male or female. Really hard to tell from here! ;)

I went with the 35mm for indoor shooting. I like it. I thought the 50 being cropped might be more difficult to use indoors.

The 50mm f/1.8 is a beautiful lens, but depends on your needs too :)

I'm considering a 35mm f/1.8, but might put off and go for a 28mm f/1.8 instead (though a lot more money).

thank you for all your comments.

i am now trying to make a decision between

50mm f/1.4
vs
35mm f/1.8

mostly for outdoor automotive photography and videography.
some indoor use and night time outdoor use....

That is an old engine Jack...in one of the finest cars made anywhere in the world...Nissan Skyline.

Poster is definitely a hairy leg...lol

My advice is stick with the wide angle...35 and like suggested above the 28 would be even better. I've shot cars with a 50 on DX and you have to stand to far away to get them in the frame. I use an old 28/3.5 that I paid like 40 bucks for to do cars...it is manual focus but so easy to use because of the great DOF with wide angle lenses.

If you're going for automotive photography, then the 35mm would be a better choice over the 50mm.
As Jeff said, you get the wider angle from it, and I'm gonna assume if you step back away from the car, then no doubt your picture would start filling up with enthusiasts wanting a look in on the car too.

Depending on your budget the 28mm might be a better choice too - but I've not heard much about how it compares to the 35mm.
