D700 shooting football(daytime) AF settings

I am shooting football in the daytime with my d700 and I have tried several different combos of AF settings. I shoot AF-C, Ch, and wondered which is best: 21point,51point,3D or Auto. Also, I have read differing opinions on Release or Release+Focus. I have tried Auto and 3D, but wondered if 21 or 51 point were any better. Any sports photographers have a particular combination they have had success with when using the D700?

I think with 21 or 51 you end up not getting the right player in focus...

The 1 time I shot soccer [it was night] I used AF-C with the single spot...Got some great shots..
