AD-L Active D Lighting

If you don't use it in low light conditions, such as a dimly lit room, it will be difficult for the camera to focus. Sometimes it won't focus at all. Outdoors...no need to use it at all.......unless it's overly dark. :)

Active D ls used in bright contrasty conditions. It holds more detail in both highlight and shadow areas.
Pictures can appear a little flat but you can pic them up easily in curves.
If you set it to auto when shooting JPGs it can save the day. Its actualy quite efective.
To see it work.. go out in strong sun and take a number of pictures of the same thing, using the different
strenghs. Try 1st without... second on Auto then try the manual fixed settings.
This will give you an idea of how and when it will help.

You can apply it in Raw, but you cant set it in camera.

Thanks for all the help guys... One last thing if I set the camera [AD-L] and images with raw and fine I'm assuming the raw file wouldn't be affected and the JPEG to be...Cheers and thanks..
