I think it would affect the reading BUT the great thing about digital is you see the results immediately and can adjust to suit the shot and what you want to emphasize.

Make sure you also look at the histogram. It's usually more precise than the image on the preview screen. At least you see the balance. Depending on how white you want the fog to be and the amount of fog, you might have to over expose about 1/3 to 1/2 of stop.
It depends on the fog itself. If its dowdy grey fog it should be ok. If its dense white fog you may
need to add upto +2 stops. The best and easiest way is use your exposure bracketing.
