I think the camera was on auto mode flash off. Would I have done better with another aperture setting.

Probably would have done better with higher iso and smaller aperture. Did you use a tripod?

No tripod. Would the point be to get a greater DOF

Bingo! Yes, it would at least give you more latitude for these kind of shots and make sure that there is more sharpness at lower shutter speeds.
