Leopard Close-up

Here's another in my series of big cats of the Portland Zoo. It's one of two on exhibit. These cats are difficult to photograph because they actually appear shy, turning their backs to viewers. Their small environment has them in seemingly constant movement with PlexiGlas barriers. Technique is everything to getting a good shot. That, and lots of patience. D7000 - ISO 1600, 1/45", F/5.6, 18-200mm lens taken at 200mm.

Absolutely gorgeous shot, Bob. Love the perfect composition of this shot. Did you use a monopod, by any chance?

I can't recall ever using a tripod or monopod at the zoo. The 18-200mm VRII lens is so stable I can handhold shots to 1/15". Granted, I've had a lot of practice holding a camera steady. I own and carry a Manfrotto monopod in cases where I might need one. This situation would have been very awkward since the viewing spot where this shot was taken doesn't give you but a split second to frame and shoot.
