When you purchase new equipment are you writing off the entire purchase on the same tax year or are you using a depreciation schedule?

For what it's worth, I run a rare coin business on ebay and my accountant claims we have to depreciate your purchases on a 4 yr schedule. He was a former IRS dude and claims this is one of their "flags". But then again, he seems to say this with pretty much everything he insists on doing, so take this for what it's worth (or not worth, I suppose)
