Looking at DIY High Speed Photography

Hi all, being new to DSLR's and searching through different methods of photography, I have come across people who have made their own circuits hooked up to their external flashes. Basically they set their camera up in a dark room with their shutter open. When there is a sharp noise like a balloon bursting, it triggers the flash to fire a quick burst which captures a balloon bursting or glass breaking.
Here is a youtube video of what I am looking into
Arduino High Speed Photography Trigger - YouTube

Has anyone created something like this before?
I would really like to try it but I'm no electronics expert and don't have a flash at the moment.
