Color me SHOCKED

I got my 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor P back from the camera doc today (oil on the blades, an easy and inexpensive fix) and I decided for grins to do an A-B comparison with my 105mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor. In every review I have read, and by my own comparison, the f/1.8 is slightly better than the f/2.5 AIS. I know it is not a good idea to try to mount a non-AI Nikkor onto the D700 because you can damage the meter coupling prong but since the prong is short I decided to try it anyway. It was a little stiff but no damage. To my astonishment, at f/5.6 the two were indistinguishable. Granted the shot I used was not one which would induce flare where the AIS would be clearly be superior.

I also compared the 50mm f/2 Nikkor H (which came with my Nikon FTn) to my 50mm f/1.8 AIS and it was superior both in the center and corners. I really was not surprised at this.

Proof that even certain 40+ year old Nikkors can still hold up to a much more modern and well established and proclaimed Nikkor.
