Reliable Focusing

So I've been roped into doing some video work for a friends band in the studio and I'm wanting to know peoples experience of focusing and how best to go about it.

I'll be using an on camera mic, managed to get a Rode Videomic so that's cool.

I'm guessing autofocus is out of the question right? Too much noise!

I'm shooting with a d7100 and a d5100. Both have a focus meter in the view finder, but its easier to shoot using live view mode. My problem is there is no focus meter in live view!

How does everyone else do things here?

use live view... set at f5.6 or higher and manual focus the lens. F8 if you want to get a bit more in view and less focusing.
This is where true video lenses shine as the focus ring is slower focusing vs a camera lens.
Practice first.
