Lens not attached

Hi,
I purchased my D3200 last year after my old D80 gave up. All is fine with the new combination of the D3200 and supplied AF-S NIKKOR 18-55. However I tried my old lense from the D80 a AF-S NIKKOR 18-135 but I get intermittent messages "Lens not attached. Has anyone got any thoughts?

Have you tried cleaning the contacts?

Perhaps the contacts on your old lens need cleaning.

yes but only with a lens cleaning cloth. I'm not sure if I should use a light application of a liquid of some sort, alcohol based perhaps.

I have some old CRT Terminal Cleaner. It smells like it contains alcohol. Anybody have any thoughts if using this will be OK?

I wouldn't use that stuff as some of those products aren't kind to plastics.

Are the metal contacts shiny ?

Yes

Denatured alcohol will work and should be safe. Put on Qtip first and then clean. You might also try a clean pencil eraser but be very careful not to get any eraser buggers in any of the camera or lens parts.

I worked in electronics for many years and the pencil eraser was the first thing we did when we had a strange problem. Pull the circuit board and clean the contacts. I do that on battery contacts now all the time.

Do you have access to another DSLR you can try the lens on? If it does the same thing, then the lens itself is very suspect.

Glad it worked for you. Now take the camera and newly working lens and go shoot some photos of the old Bevendean Hospital. I love old buildings like that
