16-85 or 18-140

I'm very happy with the 18-140mm on DX bodies, personally. While it's not particularly fast, the 16-85mm is no faster and has less zoom. The 16-85mm has an additional 2mm on the wide end, but that's not compelling enough reason to switch in my opinion.

The 16-85 might be better rated in tests, but in real life the 18-140 will probably be more useful. If you just want the sharpest you'll have to go with primes and get prepared to switch lenses quite often. It's just a question of choice as some share by primes and others by zooms...

My best advice is to wait until you see and feel the lens you have is stopping you in your photographic growth. But in my opinion, the study of light and composition should come through practice more than through lens hunting.
