That bar on the back of trucks is known as a “Mansfield bar”, after the actress Jayne Mansfield.
Ms. Mansfield was killed in 1967 in a terrible accident where the car in which she was riding rear-ended a truck. The car went underneath the truck, ripping off the top of the passenger compartment, and causing serious, fatal head injuries to her and to her driver. Two children in the back seat survived with only minor injuries.
The purpose of the Mansfield bar is to prevent that from happening.
