18-55mm vs 18-140mm!

I'm buying a Nikon D7100, and I'm not sure which lens to buy. Should i spend the extra money to get the 18mm-140mm or should i stick with the 18mm-55mm?
I'm an amateur, so I'm not exactly sure what the difference is. Does the quality change, or is it just the zoom?
Any info is helpful! Thanks in advance!

18-140 use a couple of them for my weddiing work ..great lens and may be cheaper to buy a grey import .
You must set the back focus after you have let the lens do about 300 near far focuses ( many lenses seem to run in like a car ) and if you are a jpeg user then its sharp +9.

#with these 18-xxx zooms once you get to about 150 the quality drops off fast ( 18-200.300) so you best stick to the 18-140 and crop if neccessary we have no problems selling 50% crops

Handy to know what country you are in so we know if we are talking £ or $ / import duty etc so we can advise best

I am actually selling my 18-140mm,since I traded in my D7100 I don't need it. It has a very minor and tiny blemish on the front element, which you can only see if you hold it up o the light a certain way.
Does not affect the image quality what so ever. I will be putting up in the Marketplace tomorrow, check it out if you're interested.

I would go for the 18-140 as well. If you are in the US, 18-140 refurbs are going for ~$240 right now just to give you a reference. I bought one on impulse a couple of weeks ago. I got it to replace my 18-105 and I'm very glad I got it. It is heavier than the 18-55 or 18-105. It does have a metal mount where the -55 and -105 have plastic mounts.
The 18-55 is a decent lens, but in my opinion it leads you down a path to an awkward kit. I originally got the 18-55, then I ended up with the 55-200. Then I was faced with carrying two lenses when I really didn't want/need to. Having that lens change point at 55 was a pain to me. The 18-140 makes a better 'everything' lens. Then down the road, you might consider a 35mm and a 70-300 and the 18-140 will still be your main lens.

I bought an 18-140 because the 18-55 zoom range was not long enough. Since then I rarely use the 55-300. 18-140 is a very good range.

Definitely go for the 18-140mm. I may upgrade from my 18-105mm someday. Nikon didn't make the 18-140mm until well after I bought my D7100, so mine came paired with the 18-105mm as a kit-lens. They're both great lenses. Get a B+W UV filter for it, and it will actually improve your image quality in many situations.
