seeking help with the 300 f4

Hi, I shoot mostly sports, and at the moment use D7100 with 70-200 f2.8, which gives 300-400 (in cropped mode).
Now I'm about to buy D4s, which changes everything quite a bit.
300 f2.8 costs too much for me, so I remain with the dilemma whether to buy 80-400 or 300 f4.
Can anyone share their thoughts on the 300?
Thanks,
O.

For football, the 300mm is actually ideal and sometimes not long enough depending on where you are position around the field. I would lean more towards the prime lens since it will give you better subject isolation. I have shot with the older 300mm f4 AFS with great success. A 1.4x TC might be able to give you the extra reach without going into crop mode.

I shoot the 300mm f/4 and love the lens. Strange as it may seem, and I can't explain it, the lens for sports actually focuses better for sports on my D600 than it does on my D7100 - more consistently nails the continuous focus with the D600. The sports I'm shooting is soccer and football.

To date I have never had to correct for any chromatic aberration.

This lens is very sharp.

Having shot with this lens for a few months now I have not regrets or apprehensions about recommending this lens.
