Save for web problem

I'm currently doing an online course after a loong absence from camera stuff, and am having a problem reducing the size of a photo I want to submit.
The maximum size should be 500Kb, but I can't get one of mine below 900!!
It was taken in HD. Would that make a difference??:confused:

What you want to do is make a copy of the original, then reduce the size and resolution. For web, usually 900x900 pixels at 72 dpi resolution works ok. Then when you save you can select the jpeg compression to the 500Kb with the quality slider.

Oh and I forgot, make sure you change the file's name so you don't reduce your original in case you want to print it a larger size one of these days.

This is one reason why working in RAW (Nef) and Lightroom is so nice, you always keep the original to work with and export the size you want to a web folder.

You didn't say what software you were using to do the changes but Marcel gave you good generic instructions.
Be interested to know if you were able to make the change?
