After taking pictures of my beautiful baby girl for 6 months with a less-than-great P&S and/or iPhone, I finally got around to stepping up my photo game. I just picked up a Nikon D5300, so at least I'll be able to (hopefully) take better pics of her first Christmas. I've never used a SLR-type camera before, and I imagine I'll rely (probably too much) on the Auto settings in the beginning, but I hope to become proficient at taking the controls, so to speak. I look forward to gleaning whatever knowledge I can from y'all (I already have).

Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard Buckeye

By all means use the auto settings as they do make things easier. They can also teach you a lot if you replicate them in "manual" mode and try to figure out where you can improve.

Lots of help available on here too so get those photos up!

Hello and welcome. Do a bit of reading and experimentation, get out of auto, and get the most out of your camera and your photo's, you'll enjoy (and frustrate) yourself much more!
