Simple Histogram Explanation

I know this would be exceedingly simplistic and basic information for most here, but for those new to DSLR's the histogram is something that we think should be useful but are not sure exactly what it is showing us. This youtube explains it very simply and quickly. I've read about these histograms many times but this time I got it. One of those "ah-ha" that's all it is.

Back to Basics: Your Camera's Histogram Explained

was featured on my Facebook feed from Petapixel this a.m.

Just thought I'd share for those new to photography. And for those who want a simple way to explain it when asked.

It is a very good graphical presentation, but...

He uses a colored Raw editor histogram to show it, after the fact of using the camera.

We normally only check the histogram to check for clipping at the right end. What seriously needs to be stated is that we CANNOT use the single gray histogram in the camera for this, it is really crummy and does not show the clipping we seek to see. We must use the three RGB colored histograms in the camera to judge clipping.
