Suggestions for photographing bats?

I discovered yesterday that there is a colony of about 15 bats living inside the wall of the workshop where I work. Being nocturnal, they fly out of their roost at about 10 PM, so in low light. To make matters worse, the entrance is 16 feet above ground level. I climbed up a ladder this evening to try to get some shots but it isn't easy, holding the camera in one hand for several minutes, keeping both eyes open to spot movement and the fact that they are frightened by the flash. I was using the 40mm this evening but this is obviously a dead end. Will try with the 70-300 tomorrow. Any suggestions on what I should do?

This is the only shot I got when the little guy popped out his head.
