What's New will now give you all of the threads (and blog, articles) that you have not read regardless of when you've visited the forum last.
In the past when you visited the site, it would assume that you saw everything that was new and mark things read. This was problematic because if you visited the site an hour later threads that you didn't actually read would be marked read. Now, regardless of when you visit the forum, threads that you haven't read will still be available in What's New until you either read them or mark everything read. Keep in mind you can mark individual forums read within the "Forum Tools" menu in the top right of each forum.
