Remote Release for D3X and D800

I understand the ML-L3 wireless is not compatible with either camera. Have been using a Bower 10-pin connection but frustrated that with this plugged in, the review / menu screen does not work. Shooting at night with long exposure, I need to unplug the 10-pin connector to check exposures and adjust. This is a pain. Is there another solution I am missing.

I use a Vello Freewave on my D800. It plugs in, but does not need to be removed to check anything. The RF receiver mounts to the hot shoe. Not sure why any remote would need to be unplugged to check the exposure. Are you using Bulb mode (also available on the Freewave)?
