I am not sure on "a planet far away" but if you are looking other than new, there are used sources (ebay, craigslist) and sometimes refurbs on Adorama & B&H photo.

I just bought one from Craigslist for $160 with Nikon 52mm L37c UV filter.
I'm not to "keen" about the filter, so I replaced it with the Nikon NC instead...it's now up for sale.
There is another AF-S 40mm Micro selling for $180 too.
This is in the Boston, MA Craigslist listings.

Link to Cameta Camera refurbished Nikon 40mm Micro is out of stock...they were also one of the first places I looked for a refurbished D7000 and it was out of stock too.
Both Adorama and B&H Photo are also out of stock for a refurbished one.

I bought my D5100, D7000 and 18-105 all as refurbished from them and have been extremely pleased with all three of them and the service I got from Cameta.com. Looking at the D7100 now so will have to see if I get it Refurbished or new.
