D7100 18-105mm vs. 18-140mm HELP

Ok,

So I've spent the better part of the last 3 years blasting away with a D3000 and I think I'm really late to the party, but it's time for an upgrade. Looking to get my hands on a D7100 over the holidays, but I've run into a dilema.

Local shops and big-box stores in my area are now advertising limited remaining quantities of D7100's with the 18-105mm lense kit, and are promoting the new D7100 with 18-140 lense kit.

From all the reading I've done, and conversations I've had with pro-photographers, the 18-105mm lense is a workhorse, a solid-favorite for every-day use. But all of a sudden they're now offering the 18-140mm instead.

Has anyone used the 18-140mm yet? Is it better than the 18-105? Should I be rushing to get a D7100 with the 18-105 before stock is depleted?

Thanks guys!

I have the 18-105mm and it about lives on my D7100. It's a "Jack of All Trades, Master at None" sort of lens. That being said, I'd love to have the 18-140mm but daaaaaaaaaaamn they want a ton o'money for that bad boy. My simple advice: if you can score a deal on the '7100 with the 18-140mm by all means do so. But...

Don't feel like you'll be screwing yourself getting the D7100 with the 18-105mm either. An extra 35mm of zoom is a "nice to have" but dude... Let's be clear: You're going from a D3000 to the D7100; don't ruin that by sweating details. The '7100 is going to blow you away, and either of those lenses will rock the '7100.

B&H has both kits listed for the same price through tomorrow. $1446.95. Showing a $150 savings on the 18-105 kit and a $350 savings on the 18-140 kit. If it was me I would definitely go with the 18-140 kit.

Same price?! Well *that* little detail moves this solidly into "no-brainer" territory.

well just two days ago I went to purchase the Nikkor 18-140, but as I was at the camera store, the salesmen showed me the Tamron 18-270 with Nikkor mount. for $379.00 with $70.00 rebate from Tamron.
Also a six year war on Lens. Also the first Lens I purchased that was not a Nikkor Lens.
A few photos from the Lens on by D7100.

What lenses do you have right now with your D3000?

For the same money, I'd opt for the 18-140 also. Love the versatility of my 18-105.

If you can swing the 18-140 kit... Do it!

New technology vs Old technology... not saying the 18-105 is by any means bad. The chance that you get the extra zoom, no need to carry two lenses. Definitely worth it. The 18-140 will be a great overall lens that will become a favorite replacement for its predecessor.

I see your in Montreal well Black's and Best Buy are selling the D7100 and 18-140mm kit for $1,299
Kit with 18-105mm is only $150 cheaper so its a no brainer get the newer lens. Its a bit better build quality with metal mount and of course you also get the bit extra reach.
I'm planning to get the same kit next year but first I have to learn more on my D5100:D

I would go with the 18-140 due to the metal mount over plastic if it is a lens range you want. You could probably buy just the body and the 35mm 1.8 for the same money, if you are into primes.

beware non Nikon lens on the D7100 I am having all sorts of problems with Sigma that were fine on the D7000
The tamron 18-270 is way too soft read your DxO mark before you buy

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions...you guys are all awesome!

I think I'm going to go with the D7100 18-140mm kit, seems to be the best option going forward. I also already have the 70-300mm for longer-range stuff, and gotta eventually get my hands on a 50mm 1.4g also, but that's later on...gotta save up first!

I'll keep you all posted, and I'll surely blast the forum when I get my D7100!
