Equipment Upgrade

My current setup for bird photography is a Nikon D50 with the older 80-400VR lenses used handheld. I am considering purchasing the Nikon D610 (Fx) and the new updated 80-400VR. Looking for opinions or views on this upgrade setup for bird photography. My understanding is the newest 80-400VR can be used on a FX body.

Your older 80-400 is also a FX lens.
Your upgrade would be a nice setup. The newer 80-400 is faster focus than the older version. You need to figure out whether or not you need the smaller DX sensor or the FX sensor. You gain a little reach with a DX although its basically just a crop.
With that lens... I'd be looking at a d7100 vs the d610 and then make your mind up on which way you want to go.

I'm with Mark on that one. It's pretty hard to get close to birds, and that extra 1.x reach factor might come in handy. The 7100 is pretty close spec wise to the 600/610, and might be a good option for birds, if thats what your doing mostly.
