AF confusion

:suspicion::hopelessness: I dont normally think a lot about auto focus but I seem to remember from my film camera days that you could focus on a subject and with shutter button depressed halfway, recompose and shoot leaving your main subject in focus.
I am not grasping how to do this with D7000. The manuel just confuses me. If anyone out there has an explanation I would sure love to hear it.

Havent looked at these but you may get your answer

It should work the same with the D7000. But, in order to do so, you should first set your focus area to "single point" to make sure the camera leave you to decide what you want to focus on.

Oh, I forgot, use focus "AF-S" setting.
