Iceland 2K14 - Landscapes, Cityscapes & Portraits!

I went to Iceland from the 19/02 - 23/02 with my school, and took over 1.5k photos! I edited & uploaded the best to my Flickr album, linked below.

I rented 2 lenses to use on the trip - Sigma 18 - 35mm f/1.8 & Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Both were absolutely fantastic lenses, and if I had any money I'd buy that Sigma 50mm f/1.4 right now! Shame it's over £300... My experience with Lensesforhire.co.uk was exemplary, and I got an amazing deal on both for only £45 for 6 days rental! I also used my Nikkor 55 - 300mm f/4.5 - 5.6 for some of the longer range shots, especially of the Minke whales. Unfortunately I do not have the time or patience to individually list the EXIF data for each photo, ask me what you'd like to know and I can tell you! I only saw the Northern Lights once, and it was at a time when I only had my 50mm and no tripod, so I was doing long exposures handheld... It made for interesting effects though, the colours really stood out.

I went on a "Golden Circle Tour", visiting the likes of Geysir, Gullfoss, Thingvellir, Hellisheidarvirkjun thermal power plant, along with enjoying the general sites of Reykjavik, at day & night. I also really enjoyed using the prime lens, taking portraits was surprisingly fun!

I have also printed some photo's, and the look awesome!

Apologies, I wasn't sure where to post the thread due to the nature of my photos. Where would you recommend posting this thread?

Thank you.

You probably could have just posted this to the D3200 or Landscape forum. Maybe a mod can move it.

As for EXIF data, when you click on a photo from the set there is an option to view the EXIF data under the '...' menu, so no worries there. Iceland is on my photography bucket list. Would have loved to have had some foreground perspective for the Aurora Borealis photos. The colors are great but you lose all sense of dimension without something else in them.

Yeah, unfortunately the lights were very faint, hardly visible to the naked eye. They were also taken in central Reykjavik so light pollution was a major issue. I chose not to include the foreground as it would have looked a little blurry using 5 second exposure handheld. Hell, at least I saw them right? Haha

I think I may move the set to the D3200 forum, but it's not hugely popular. I have a few portrait photos that I really like so these wouldn't be suitable for that sub forum.

i would think there should be a ton of snow at that time of year. Nice shots.

It didn't snow once! Even though it was very icey! The average daytime high was around 0c, at night it would drop to -5c, with wind chill it was a lot colder.

Some nice portaraits you made: Bjorn+bokeh is my favorite! Landscapes, however, seem to be lacking "vivacity" (except for that "pier" with the seagulls and the "distant houses" - are you the guy who asked for advice on using a polarizer, some time ago?).

Thanks! I am very pleased with my portraits. Yeah, I was wondering about how to use a polarizing filter. Unfortunately for me I was in a rush packing my camera equipment and just completely forgot it! Plus it wasn't a great environment for a tripod so I wasn't actually able to take it with me anywhere due to the size... I do wish I had a greater opportunity to really focus my shots, as at most points we were annoyingly rushed along from place to place, so I only had a couple of minutes to make the most of it.
