Tamron 90mm Di 2.8 Macro not functioning properly

Picked up a used lens off eBay, received it today and upon opening box I noticed a sound coming from inside that sounded like a piece bouncing around, upon further investigation, I noticed aperture blades open fully when lens tilted one way and closed completely when tilted the other way.

Already been in contact with buyer and they are refunding purchase price and shipping.

I am more or less just wondering what is going on with it mechanic wise.

Seller ended up refunding full amount plus shipping and with a message of "don't bother sending it back either, merry christmas" lol

It still takes a super sharp photo when aperature wide open.

This is why I never buy from EBay. Yes I know you get your money back but it is such a hassle

First time purchasing any camera related item from a personal seller, I do find Henry's Canada has the odd good deal on items. Lots of open box store displays. I recently ordered a Westcott umbrella kit that should arrive tomorrow.

I would definitely contact Tamron about a repair. They have very good customer service. It is an excellent lens.

Yea I will investigate this to see how much the repair would cost.

Would be curious to hear if the original owner registered the lens with Tamron for the warranty, and how Tamron handles the repair (if you go that route).

Is your version the one with image stabilization (VC), or the previous model?

Previous model. This guy here:

TAMRON 90MM F2.8 DI NIKON MACRO II(MOTOR 104272ENII

I will be going repair route after holidays and will keep you updated at what they say, do and cost.

I have over the years had many good bargains off eBay, sounds like you had some bad luck.

It could have been bad luck, however I have the broken lens and am not out a penny. Besides my time of bidding and contacting seller, I am still ahead. Will be interesting to see what Tamron says. Buyer has 100% positive feedback and sells camera stuff by the look of past sales on eBay. I told him I would ship back and he could contact Canada post for insurance coverage if lens was working when he dropped off. Got the response that going insurance route is more of a pain then worth and to keep lens, fully refunded and a merry Christmas too boot!

I'd be OK with that outcome! even if you get a quote for repair and decide not to go through with it - it will still sell as spares and/or repairs on ebay if you re-listed.

Good luck, hopefully it is a cheap fix :encouragement:

Well lens was sent in today. They were unable to give an estimate based off the info I gave them, so time will tell. They will not do any repair work until they contact me to give the go ahead at "x" dollars.
