Hi all,
So this post explains pretty well I think what my question is.
Nikon D5600. Shooting RAW. In camera settings are adjusted for lighting, vinegette, noise reduction (high iso), etc.
Here's what I have been doing.
Importing the RAW images into Lightroom. That's it. What I then noticed is the RAW files look like crap compared to their JPEG counterparts. After viewing several posts on this forum I think I understand why, because the JPEG's are processed by the camera and the .NEF raw files are not processed during import into LR. So, I "think" my in camera settings are lost during import. Correct?
Second, If using ViewNX, there appear to be options to set camera settings (lense correction, picture profile, etc). So if I were to use this program to import, I could apply those settings to the RAW files. However, the results would only be viewable in ViewNX unless I exported to TIFF file. Correct?
What I thought I could do, and wanted to do, was use ViewNX to import RAW images, process them so they get the camera settings, and then import them into Lightroom. However this doesn't work because lightroom doesn't see the changes I made to the RAW file in ViewNX. Correct?
So......
I guess my question is...if I don't want to manually edit every raw file in lightroom...what's the best method to get raw files into LR with some of the in camera settings applied? Is it as simple as what the video in the link describes? Setting the develop "Profile" in Lightroom to one of the Nikon settings, set some of the lens correction settings, and then save that as a new custom preset? Then when importing into LR, Under "Apply during import" select my preset? Correct?
If that's the way to go, am I losing out on anything? The ViewNX documentation says that program "automatically selects color space when opening file". I understand the LR presets are adobe's best guess at what the image should look like.
I'm basically looking for a good way to get RAW files into LR that have some in camera settings applied (specifically noise reduction, lens corrections) so I at least have a minimally "processed' RAW file in which to work with, and edit further as I see fit. If I want to use LR as my main program and not ViewNX, is setting the LR profile during import the best bet?
Sorry for the long post. I guess I didn't understand that the in camera settings I setup don't get applied to the actual RAW file when importing into LR. I only realized this after noticing the RAW files were much nosier than the JPEG counterparts, then I realized the JPEG's have been processed and the RAW file is just the info the camera lens captured.
I appreciate any comments, suggestions, etc. I'm new and trying to learn all these new concepts!
THANKS!
