Insurance for Gear

Hey everyone!

As an amateur, do any of you insure your gear? A homeowner's rider will not work at this point. Who insures this stuff if you are not a professional?

Thank you for your help!

---i did till i had to have some equipment repair and the insurance company doubled my rate. you should be able to have
your insurance agent write a policy. they will need serial numbers, model numbers and purchase price.

I don't have insurance, but all my gear is registered with Lenstag - Protect your camera equipment, images and help make the world safer for photography on iOS, Android and the web..

Lenstag was designed to get your gear on record with the least amount of effort, the strongest ownership claim and as quickly as possible.

Lenstag also finds your stolen gear & images, tells you how much your gear is worth & gives you free documents to protect your photography and business.

I have the free version which gives you up to nine items. The paid version is $20 (sale price, usually $29) and you get unlimited items.

My homeowners could not do a rider for camera gear, only jewelry and fine art, it may have fallen under a catch all category for 5k, but that was it.

I found Professional Photographers of America and joined their organization at 27/mo and they provide 15k of protection for gear, and you can upgrade it. There is a lot of other educational info there as well.
Thank you for your help!

I have never insured any of my gear and so far after many decades I have never dropped anything or had anything stolen. It is one of things that if something happens you will wish you had insured it and if you have been paying insurance for decades and never had to claim, you might regret it.
If the value of any item is more than you can pay out to replace it, then it might be worth insuring, otherwise you might want to take your chances and just look after it as well as you can.

I have dropped, or set down hard a nikon 80-400. Fortunately, just the filter was shattered. Since I purchased her a 600mm f/4 and we do travel i thought it prudent, especially since it is free with the membership which has a significant amount of educational resources and webinars as well.
We are going to try shooting from a kayak too, so that creates new hazards.

I think I would definitely insure a 600mm f4 as I reckon that would have cost you a few cents ;)
