The D5500 is a very capable camera. Full stop. Not much else to say about that. Not really sure to say it's strong points are... It's simply a very solid DSLR that, with the right lens and in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, will deliver excellent results.

The D5500 came out in early 2015 but was superseded by the D5600 in late 2016. That's a pretty typical upgrade cycle for Nikon which really didn't give any particular body a lot of time to permeate the market.

If I were buying one or the other today, I'd probably spring for the D5600; Ama-zon is selling D5600 refurbs for $629 that come with the latest and greatest 18-55mm kit lens... That's a pretty sweet deal.
