If you were happy with the D3100, then the D3300 might work out very well for you if you can afford it on your budget!:)

Just looking at the curry's website, they have the D5200 at £399 with kit lens+ and if you buy the sigma 70-300mm lens at the same time that cost £76.49. And you can claim £30 cash back.

The D5300 is £459 and you can claim £40 with that 1. And you can get the sigma 70-300mm lens for £76.49 with that 1 as well.

Have a look here

Nikon D5300 with 18-55mm VRII definitely within your budget: D5300 w/18-55mm

Nikon D5300 with 18-140mm is a bit of a stretch but that's a nice lens: D5300 w/18-140mm

I'm just tossing out a couple ideas; you may be able to find better prices seeing as I don't know where to shop in your part of the world.

Only my opinion.... I'd choose the D3300 over the D5200, and the D5300 over the D3300.

With that said, the D3300 is a fine camera and the D5300 has more "extras" like the articulating LCD. For still photographs, I doubt you'd see any differences.

I believe the D3300 is Nikon's best value. Your choice of lens quality will have the biggest impact on the image quality.

D3300 is the best value for money body. That with the kit 18-55 makes a good kit. Add a 55-200 and you have ability to shoot in most situations. At a later stage if you want better low light performance graduate of an FX body - D750 is again the best value for money body.

The more expensive bodies - D5xxx and D7xxx have additional user convenience features, but the basic camera remains the same with same sensor and same processor (D5300, D7100). I have been using a D3300 for nearly two years and am extremely happy with it.

Agreed.

One strong point (at least in my opinion) in favor of the D5300 is it having 39 total focus-points, 9 cross-type (vs 11 points total, 1 cross-type, on the D3300). That's a significant advantage for the D5300, assuming you plan on using Auto-focus. The articulated rear LCD is sharper and cleaner than on the D3300 as well. Small things individually, but they do start to add up.

Thanks for Help.
Is there much difference between the 3 cameras mentioned that I as a beginner would notice? or would the difference make my photos better??
Also if I were to go for the cheaper d3300 which lens would be good for the Dog Show photos?? rather than the kit lens?? would like to get some good shots of the dogs moving also some really close up Macro type shots too.

There will not be any noticeable difference in images taken as they have similar sensor and same processor, unless you think that 14bit RAW will be better than 12bit RAW of the D3300.

The 18-55 VR-II kit lens is a gem of a lens and it beats zooms upto four times its price in IQ. The reason it is so inexpensive is that it is mass produced in huge quantities and not because it is a "cheap" design/manufacture.

For fast action you will need fast lenses and/or good high ISO performance. In daylight the kit 18-55 is good enough. For low light you can use the 35mm F1.8 DX.

The 18-55 at 55mm can shoot down to 0.28m at a maximum magnification of 0.31x. That is enough for most close up shots. Macro lenses can go upto 1:1, but I doubt you will need that magnification at Dog Shows.

Think I will go for the NIKON D3300 DSLR Camera with 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 VR II Zoom Lens for £299 that leaves another £200 for maybe another decent lens, but which one??
I would tell you to skip the 18-55mm and look for the Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR instead. I think you'll find the extra focal length invaluable.

@kevinp ... here's the lens that Paul was referring to (and I agree) NIKON D5500 DSLR Camera with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Zoom Lens - Black Deals | PC World ... but it doesn't look like PCWorld sells it by itself and not part of a bundle.

I have the 55-300mm lens you mentioned (came with my D5300 kit), but I would not recommend it as the sole lens for a camera if you originally thought the 18-55mm was a good starting point. I like the 18-140mm as a better all around lens than the 55-300mm.

I agree with this, I LOVED the D3300 I had, only switched to a D600 for full frame :)

I would think about putting something like the 35mm or the 50mm prime into your bag

OK After all the cameras mentioned in this thread, ive decided to go for this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/cameras-camcorders/digital-cameras/dslr-and-compact-system-cameras/nikon-d7200-digital-slr-camera-with-18-105-mm-f-3-5-5-6-zoom-lens-black-10124392-pdt.html I know its not the budget stated with but done a lot of research the last week or so and kept coming back to it.
Anyway went to PC World today and this Kit has just came out of stock, they do have the Body but could not decide which lens to get, the store I went to did not have much choice as they were short on lenses, so going to try another local store tomorrow, they said they will have to wait from Nikon to either put the package and kit back on offer or make another kit up with the D7200.
Anyone recommend which lens to get if I decide to get the body? also how long will It take Nikon to get the Kit or another back on offer??
Thanks so far for help.
