D5000 syncs up to 1/200 sec. When you say that "now your photos are coming out dark" do you mean that before they were OK? Do you mean high speed sync? Tough to answer your question with the limited amount of info given. Please give shooting mode, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, flash mode, so we can be more helpful.
