Micro SD

Hi,
I apologise if the answer to this question should be common sense but I don't want to go ahead and just maybe damage my new camera.
I've seen the list of approved SD cards for my D5300 and I received a card free with my camera. However, I've realised that I have a micro SD card for my tablet, which is unused, along with an adapter. Can I use this card with the adapter in my camera?

Most likely, yes. Be sure to format the card in the camera before using it, take some test shots before taking anything of value to make sure there are not any issues.

I think it should work. My concern would be the write speed of the micro SD. If it's too slow then you might have slight performance issues.

I don't know what camera you have, but check the burst rate, that is, fire off a bunch of shots in continuous mode. Shoot some video too. Slow cards can cause video shooting to mysterious end.

I have used Mini SD in my 610 quite a bit. I use the mini SD in my phone when done shooting, for quick posting to friends. Rather then load into computer.

I would like to know if the adapter has any limitations. I think most of the tests done on the micro SD cards are without the adapter. My preference is to use microsd because my pc has a slot for that and I don't need to buy a USB 3.0 adapter for the full size SD card if the microsd card with adapter is just as fast. For reference, the card I'm looking to buy is the SanDisk extreme pro, 32gb

I have heard there is no electronics in the adapter, its just direct connections. So it should not affect performance. I've got no facts though, but that is what people are saying.

This ^^^

While it may work at an acceptable level, prices of SD cards are crazy affordable. I'd just use a class 10 SD card personally.

Is it not true that the micro SD card sticks out of the adapter a small amount, and therefore the door on the camera body will not close.

Is this so, and will this stop the micro SD card/adapter combination working on my D3200?

I have a few of these. Mine are cheap low-budget cards so I don't use them in the camera, but I can say for sure that they do fit in my cameras. The micro sd card fits in a recess of the adapter and does not stick out at all in any direction.

I have a few SanDisk adapters, SanDisk microSD cards and a few real SanDisk and Lexar SD cards in front of me right this moment. The answer to your question is a resounding no.

Length of the adapters with the microcard inside are exactly the same as that of the real cards, and thickness is actually smaller by a hair.

Can't comment about other makes though since I only use SanDisk and Lexar CF and SD cards.

Agreed. Write speeds of microSD cards are typically noticeably lower than of their SD counterparts, even if both are labeled as Class 10. My SanDisk microSD Class 10 card can barely sustain 10 MB/s write speeds. That's fast enough for video shooting, but results in longer write times for burst photo shooting.

Now if you primarily shoot in JPEG, and don't do a lot of burst shooting, it may not matter much.

I meant to get back on this but one thing led to another and it slipped my mind.
Micro-cards with adapters don't work, at least in the D5300. The card with adapter fits OK but when taking a photograph the message "You can't use this card, it is the wrong type..." appears on the screen and nothing is saved on the card. I tried reformatting it but I couldn't get menus or anything with that particular card inserted.

It's most likely just incompatibility of your particular microSD card, or wrong format type. I just tried a 32GB SanDisk Ultra microSD card in my D5200, and it worked just fine. I don't see why the D5300 would be any different in that respect.

It's a Samsung SDHC 32GB I would have thought it would work.
Not to worry, I was only ever going to carry it as an emergency back-up in case I run out of memory on my proper cards.

FYI, if anyone is looking for a micro SD card with good write speeds and decent price ($35 right now), this SanDisk Extreme 64GB microSD card seems to deliver it. It is essentially as fast or faster than the full size SanDisk Extreme 64GB SD card.

Would make it handy if you plan on popping the card directly into your tablet to do some basic photo editing. Adobe Lightroom is now free for Android.

I was able to pick up a Lexar Professional 1000x 128gb SD card for $39 last month. It solved my dilemma on whether to get a full size SD card or microsd
