Eeegads! I got a gig!

I got suckered into photographing the "Feast with the Beasts" event at the Toledo Zoo next Friday. It's $250 a person 5 course meal sold-out fundraising event for the zoo. Yup, I volunteered, but that's pretty much how the zoo operates. No biggy there. I have no interest in going professional anyway.

So, it's 6:30 to 7:30 which will be civil twilight and the beginning of the golden hour. However, I don't have all the details yet. Those are forthcoming. Not sure if it's going to be outside like years before, or inside the new aquarium that opened this year. I know they get to have some "animal encounters" the normal folks do not, but not all sure about that yet either.

I'll have more details in the next few days, but I think I'm going to rent a lens for this.

What lens would you want to use?

That's pretty cool. I was doing some work at the Toledo Zoo today, and I'll be back tomorrow doing some more. Over the years I've been doing work there, I've gotten to see some pretty neat things that most people will never get a chance to, like back surgery on one of Siegfried and Roy's white lions. Enjoy the gig!

(BTW, do you rent from the shop in Perrysburg?)

good luck. You may start drinking your product after it is over. :) at $250 a plate they are going to want a
lot of photos for the social pages. Shoot the equipment you know, maybe rent another 7000 and lens.
Good flash, batteries and memory cards

What lenses do you have? I would use something that opens nice and wide to let that light in.

Well done on the gig.

The 17-70mm should serve you well... We're talking about the f/2.8-4.5 right? I'd feel better with all f/2.8 or faster but I'm probably over thinking this. I'd suggest adding 70-200mm f/2.8 to your bag and calling it good... Unless you know you'll need a more specialized lens for something.

And yeah, take your flash.

Yes, but you've got to make darn sure that the guests look better than the penguin. This means take more than one shot per guest watch out for closed eyes and if you use a flash, bounce it.

They're just going to email a snapshot to em. I took tons of photos, the penguins were not cooperating.

I think that's Skipper. And if you know who I'm talking about, you're awesome!

If you look closely at the dinner table centerpiece, you'll see that the jellyfish is floating in a coral reef.

This was the photo du jour. It was a conscious decision not to use a flash, and blast those poor penguins for an hour.
