I have this lens for my D3200, as well, and it's a fine lens for what you are describing(IMO). What changes were you expecting to see, and do you have any photos to show that might help explain what you are trying to accomplish?

If you would upload one it would help us to see what or if there is a problem. Here is how to resize and upload.

Guidelines to adding a photo to your post.

1. Resize photo to 1000px on the long side.
2. Resolution set to 72ppi (Pixels Per Inch)

These guidelines will be good for viewing on a computer but will not be good for printing. This will help safeguard your copyright.

Love seeing more Dallas members!

Please share an image or two with the results that you're unhappy with, and we can provide some guidance on how things could be change.

The 35mm, technically, is not a wide angle lens. On a crop camera such as yours, it's the equivalent of a 52mm lens on a full frame camera. As for portraits.......yes, it can be used for that, but a better lens would be the 50mm f/1.8, which is the equivalent of a 75mm lens on a full frame (FX) camera.

The fact that it's an f/1.8 lens means that it lets in more light at a fixed aperture, thereby giving it less dof and sharper images in low light conditions. As suggested, post a couple of your shots so that we may see exactly what your concerns are with them.
