Blurry Night Sport Photo

This photo was taken last night at an MX track, I had the 200mm along with my Sigma flash and I had most everything on auto. I tried changing my settings to sport, night time, auto.... nothing worked. If I was far away and not in the lights too much, I would get a clearer picture, but the min I got closer to the track my camera struggled and pictures came out a blurry mess... Any thoughts?

Even if you were panning this,at 1/60 of a sec it wouldn't be clear and sharp...

Man running 1/250 of a sec...Quad runner running You would need at least that, and pan the shot as well

I am not an export but I looked at the EXIF data (on the 2nd pic) and it shows a shutter speed of 1/60 with F/4.8.. as the background is also blurred, it appears you were panning with the subject and also not steady when you snapped. you definately need a faster shutter speed.

You had an ISO at 1600.. looks like the only way to speed that combo up is add more ISO (and noise) cuz you need a faster shutter. I have the same lens and it really is not fast enough for that type of action... best thing is try some with stepping up the ISO

I kind of figured my shutter speed just wasn't fast enough and I am thinking of getting a tripod or stick to keep me steady since I am not use to the weight with the flash added.

I take it you didn't read my post about putting your camera in Shutter Mode (S) and using 1/250th sec. You also have to pan with the rider while keeping him in focus. If possible, get yourself a monopod to help steady the camera while shooting. Oh....and use matrix metering. :)

This is the kind of stuff I've been doing for the last three years. I just uploaded this to give you an example.
