Big Cats of The Portland, OR Zoo

One of my hobbies in retirement is photography. I have a wealth of opportunities since I live in the Pacific Northwest. I consider this one of the most greatest areas of our country for natural outdoor beauty. Within a 50 mile radius of Portland I have hundreds of miles of pristine beaches, mountain ranges, forests, the Columbia Gorge and high desert in Hood River & further West in Pendleton, OR.

Within 10 miles of my apartment house I can find the Portland Zoo, The Portland Japanese & Chinese Garden and the Portland Rose Gardens. There are flower festivals everywhere as Oregon is one of the largest commercial growers of trees, bushes & flowers in the United States. I am particularly entranced with the zoo. I love all the animals but must admit it's the big cats that intrigue me the most. With my yearly membership in hand I can go to the zoo 7 days a week for free.

I was a professional wedding & portrait photographer way back in the late 70s. I used two Mamiya 645s, Metz 45CT1 flashes and a second "potato masher" pro flash with accumulator power pack and umbrellas.

I su re wish you would quit bragging about our state. I backfire license here almost my entire like of 60 years, and it is important for folks to know that the climate here stinks not to mention that Oregon is becoming hugely over crowded.

Fantastic shots Bob, excellent lighting, composition and Sharp!

On a side note, you will be asked by a moderator to only post one shot at a time in the critque area. It allows us to "focus" on that one shot and provide a better assesment (instead of generalizing over a group of shots).

Were these all shot with your 18-200?

Makes me want to get out to our local zoo!

These were all taken with my 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 VRII Nikkor. I apologize if I broke the posting limit since I saw no other category for putting up multiple shots with a theme.

Just giving you a head's up. "They" seem to want multiple shots in blogs or daily/weekly threads. The problem with that is you don't get much feedback/traffic. I have sometimes started specific threads under general photography to post ongoing series shots which others can join in.

Ooops. In addition to the typos I inflicted, I forgot to include a smiley. Your state is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I hope to visit it someday. These photos of the zoo cats are brilliant, by the way. I still remember the old one that existed before the new zoo was built. What a great place to visit.

I moved to Oregon from Graniteville, SC near Aiken. I lived there 13 years. No mountains, waterfalls or oceans. You do have hurricanes, frog strangler thunderstorms and fire ants. I think I'll stay here. LOL :)

I, on the other hand, live in North Carolina with the mountains, waterfalls and Atlantic Ocean to keep me company. Look at some of my past postings and you will see the abundance of flora available to me here also. Like you, I think I'll stay here!
Besides, I have it on good authority that Oregon is over crowded! :)

Fantastic shots. I particularly like the sharpness in all of them, and with the Lynx (? #5) you've beautifully blurred the background to focus on the cat. What settings did you use here and how far from the subject were you?

Actually that's a Caracal, not a Lynx. If you want to look at the Exif data about all the shot's details download iExif for Windows PC or iExifer for Macs for free at Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com.

Thank you :)
However, I'm using an iPad and TapaTalk, so the tool won't work for me...
