Water Cacophany

The intent was to capture the chaos that ensues when falling water impacts more water. I was kind of bored with it until I turned it into BW and softened up the contrast a bit.

+1 for the second one.
It captures my attention much more easily since I have something to focus on right away. It still conveys your message in my opinion.

Just my two cents:D

The first photograph is more about expressing how I feel about the water than about a technically correct photograph. Maybe I should have mentioned that, or maybe this is not the right forum for that kind of thing. Anyhow, thank you for your thoughts.

I have read the comments with some pleasure. Your responses to the honest appraisals

seem to be that of disappointment that we did not recognize your genius.

If you want to be told how wonderful you are, just let us know that's the goal.

Otherwise, you will get our honest opinions.

Whatever your preference is is fine. Just remember that when someone says "the second one is better", that person is only saying that he likes the second one more than the first one. It doesn't make the picture better or worse. People are just posting their opinions but sometimes use the wrong words for them.

Now, I like the first one, but not as it is. I think it lack contrast enough so it is difficult to understand what is happening with the water. I did a little experiment with your picture just adding contrast and would like to know if you like this version better.

Please let me know your opinion.

@CPG: You are wrong and passive aggressive. That is all. Peace to you.

@MC yes, indeed that's what I have since done to the original, not quite as stark, though. I really like how at first there is really nothing to focus on, but once you stare at it for a few seconds, you start to notice the textures on the mini waves and the sparks of water kind of zinging around. I dunno, that's what I see, especially when I made it more contrasty, as you have done.

When you make a photograph, you're the one there. You know what is happening. If you showed me that first photograph without the back story I'd wonder what the Hell I was looking at. Even the contrasty version doesn't really say "water hitting water" to me. The third one gives the viewer something to focus on and immediately identify. You must realize that the human attention span really isn't all that long these days and if someone has to look at the photo for a while to "get it" you run a higher chance of them just walking away from it all together.

Now, you have your opinion because of your experience taking the photograph, but you can't expect everyone to view the photograph as YOU view it. Hell, you can't expect anyone to ever view your photographs as you do. I know Pete came off a little harsh but when you post your photos on a public forum, in the Critique section nonetheless, you must be prepared for anything and everything you're going to get in return. I know sometimes I'll get comments that I may not agree with or want to agree with due to my own personal affinity to a photo but I take it as unbiased opinion and use it to make my next photograph better. We're all constantly learning and that's what makes this forum great. You said something about this not being "that kind" of place (referring to the abstract, artsy, "deeper meaning" photos) but if you search my posts you'll find an abstract set of mine that has been getting good reviews. We can all appreciate a photograph for more than what it is, we just won't hesitate to give you our honest and unbiased opinion. You can either roll with it and use it to improve, or don't ask. Sorry for being so blunt and lengthy but I see this all the time and is the reason I started the C&C thread.

I apologize if I have rubbed anyone the wrong way. There really is no reason for anyone to be defensive. I understand the term 'critique' and I appreciate everyone's input.

Being a performing musician for so long, as well as a published author, I am always prepared for rejection or critisicm! ;)

For what it's worth, I printed and framed a version of the photo and gifted it to a therapist friend of mine, who ended up hanging it in the room in which he sees patients. He actually loves it because it is so non-descript, and (so he says) gives his clients a place for their eyes to rest without interrupting their chain of thought... or something like that. He decorates with that in mind I guess. *shrug*

Anyway, I have another image in mind that I'll be posting soon for your collective critiques.

Thank you.
